oh, substitute teachers.

I returned to my classroom this morning and received the following note from my sub:

I'm sorry, but I'm not comfortable teaching anything pertaining to the bible. It's not a religious thing, I just don't think that Christian stories should be taught as "history."

The note is unfortunate because we are teaching Christianity as a product of the Roman Empire, just like Hinduism influenced Ancient India and Buddhism was an integral part of Ancient China. We read The Odyssey when we studied Ancient Greece and it is basically a big 'ole religious story as well. The Christian stories he refers to are the fact that Jesus was born Jewish, the fact that Jesus acquired followers, and the fact that he and his followers were persecuted by the Romans.

The students reported that he showed them Chicken Little movie for an hour instead. Quality!
